Commentary

  • Over 50. 7 runs. Bowler: Nathan Coulter-Nile. India: 313/8(rr 6.26)
  • 49.6

Nathan Coulter-Nile to Mohammed Shami. Back of a length, outside off stump backing away driving, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, fielded by Wade.

Australia are underway with a victory in the series and drag it back to 3-1 with one to play. Good performance all round from them today. Aaron Finch and David Warner set things up with their mammoth opening stand. Then a decent display with the ball and in the field restricted India 21 short of their score. The hosts were not at their best with the ball, and made a good effort in the chase to recover, but it was not enough today. A good confidence booster for Australia, and they will now set their sights on finishing the series with another win.

  • 49.5

FOUR! Nathan Coulter-Nile to Mohammed Shami. Full toss, to leg on the front foot Slog, well timed in the air under control past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Bashed over the legside for a one bounce four. But it doesn’t really matter now. Coulter-Nile served up a knee high full toss that is easily put away.

  • 49.4

  • 49.1

OUT! Caught (Sub). Nathan Coulter-Nile to Axar Patel. Length ball, to leg on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on. Patel hits through the line but straight into the hands of long on. Off the bottom end of the bat and never looked like clearing the man. Australia have this one in the bag now.

  • 47.5

OUT! Bowled. Kane Richardson to MS Dhoni. Slower ball back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, inside edge. He drags on this time though. Dhoni swings hard, loses his shape, and gets thick inside edge back onto his leg stump. That might be curtains for the hosts.

  • 47.4

SIX! Kane Richardson to MS Dhoni. Slower ball back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot driving, well timed in the air under control over deep extra cover for 6 runs. • 46.3

FOUR! Pat Cummins to MS Dhoni. Back of a length, off stump on the back foot flick, well timed past fine leg for 4 runs. Dhoni is the last hope. He tucks it off the hip to the fine leg fence to earn a much needed boundary.

  • 46.2

Pat Cummins to Axar Patel. Length ball, to leg on the front foot pushing, thick edge to third man for 1 run, fielded by Richardson.

  • 46.1

OUT! Bowled. Pat Cummins to Manish Pandey. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, missed. Australia taking vital wickets which is leading them to a victory. Cummins skids it through Pandey’s ugly swipe, and it clips the top of leg stump to send him on his way.

Change in pace, Kedar is through the shot too early, and chips it straight up in the air down to long off. Finch mops up, and it pegs back India again. MS Dhoni is the new man though. An experienced head in these situations.

  • 42.3

SIX! Nathan Coulter-Nile to Manish Pandey. Half volley, outside off stump on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control over deep mid wicket for 6 runs. What a time to pull out a shot like that. A flick of the wrists and a flourished follow-through from Pandey. He whips it over the mid wicket fence for six. Sublime timing there.

  • 42.2

Nathan Coulter-Nile to Kedar Jadhav. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot flick, to fine leg for 1 run, fielded by Zampa.

  • 42.1

  • 40.6

FOUR! Nathan Coulter-Nile to Kedar Jadhav. Length ball, outside off stump moves in front flick, well timed past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. Fifty for Jadhav. Brings it up with a wonderful shot too. Walks across his crease and down the pitch too, then whips it across to the mid wicket boundary.

  • Key events
  • 49.3

That is 300 for Australia off 309 balls.

  • 48.5

OUT! Bowled. Yadav to Handscomb. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Slog, missed. Right through his this time. Umesh flings it down at full speed, and Handscomb doesn’t adjust to the pace. Another big swing of the bat, but it passes the inside edge to clatter into middle and off. Decent cameo.

  • 46.5

OUT! Caught. Yadav to Head. Slower ball short, down leg side on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to fine leg, by Rahane. Slower ball bouncer again from Umesh, and Head cannot generate enough pace on the ball to clear the rope. Rahane was waiting just inside the edge to pouch it comfortably. A scratchy innings there.

  • 37.5

APPEAL! Zampa to Jadhav. Leg spinner length ball, outside off stump on the back foot Late Cut, missed to wicketkeeper for no runs, by Wade, appeal made for Stumped

  • 37.1

OUT! Caught. Zampa to Pandya. Leg spinner back of a length, middle stump on the back foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long off, by Warner. Zampa gets his man in the end. A big heave down the ground, and it scews off the outer half of the bat down to Warner at long off. More turn on offer for the leg spinner now, so it could be more difficult as it goes on. Plenty of twists in this game.

  • 37.1

OUT! Caught. Yadav to Smith. Length ball, off stump on the front foot flick, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid wicket, by Kohli. India are turning things around. Australia’s captain comes and goes quickly, and he chips a simple chance to Kohli at mid wicket. Umesh does the business once again. Through the shot too early, and it was a soft dismissal for Smith. What can India restrict the Aussies to here?

  • 35.5

OUT! Caught. Yadav to Finch. Leg cutter length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Pandya. Finch cannot get to a century. The perfect scenario for India with two new batsmen in. A slower, wide delivery from Umesh, and Finch tries to drag it over the head of mid on. Right off the toe of the bat though, and it nestles into Pandya’s hands on the edge of the ring.

  • 34.6

OUT! Caught. Jadhav to Warner. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Patel. The filthy bowling of Jadhav has worked in the end. A big drag down from the round arm bowler. Warner tries to heave it out the park, but gets a poor connection, and sends it straight down long on’s throat. An incredible platform for Australia’s new batsmen to build on.

  • 34.1

APPEAL! Richardson to Jadhav. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot dropped, to silly point for 1 run, direct hit by Smith, appeal made for Run Out Nudged into the offside and they take a quick single. Pandya runs the bat in and makes it home with ease. Brilliant running.

  • 33.3

That is 201 for Australia off 207 balls.

  • 32.6

That is 200 for India off 200 balls.

  • 30.5

That is 103 for David Warner off 106 balls.

  • 24.4

That is 50 for Aaron Finch off 68 balls.

  • 24.2

OUT! Bowled. Coulter-Nile to Kohli. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot Steer, bottom edge. There is the vital wicket. The dangerman goes as Kohli plays on! Looking to guide it down to third man for a single, but it is too close to the body, and he gets a thick inside edge back onto off stump. Australia perhaps back in front.

  • 22.6

OUT! Run Out. Richardson to Kohli. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, to backward point, run save by Smith, shy attempt by Smith, fielded by Handscomb, by Richardson. Incredible bit of fielding from Steve Smith, which causes all sorts of confusion in the running. He somehow manages to hang onto the ball diving full length to his left, quickly gets up to throw at the stumps. Both batsmen were trying to slide their bat in at the striker’s end. The shy misses, but Handscomb is backing up, and has time to throw back to the bowler and remove the bails at the other end. Rohit is left stranded. Crucial wicket.

  • 19.6

Dropped Catch! Head to Kohli. Off break back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, mis-timed to extra cover for 1 run, dropped catch by Head, shy attempt by Handscomb. It was a very difficult chance, but you don’t want to drop the Indian captain. Kohli popped it back to the bowler off the backfoot. Head dives full length to his left in his followthrough, and can only get fingertips to it.

  • 18.2

OUT! Caught. Richardson to Rahane. Length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Finch. There is the breakthrough that the visitors needed! The drinks interval brings the wicket. Rahane charges down to hit it out the ground, but shanks it down the throat of long on. An unnecessary shot given the situation, and it brings the Aussies back into it.

That is 102 for Australia off 107 balls.

That is 102 for India off 102 balls.
